Instagram-Teacher Talk Tuesdays

Mrs. Stanford posted her new desire to use instagram for teaching reasons.  Then, I read Teaching it with Class posted as well.

I immediately got excited and went to creating my school instagram account.

I have added the button to my social media area on the right

I am in the process of linking it to my facebook RSS feed as well!  How awesome to have everything in one place to share with other teachers!

I have joined up with the plan to hashtag up (I made that up but it works, I guess)

Join the fun, join instagram, and join the collaboration between teachers and their phones!  Click on the link below to follow me!

Earth Day & Trees

What a busy week!  Our theme was Earth Day and Trees this week.  Students are making me so proud I could cry!

On Earth Day, we watched the Lorax and talked about why we need to save the
trees and our Earth.  We did a Lorax themed project in which students emphasized the importance of taking care of the Earth with the "Unless" quote from the book:

There were two versions of the project this week.  Some students did more writing than others, but all did a great job!

We then talked about the three R's = Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  Students were very concerned we still cut down trees to make things (to have them the first time before we recycle).  We then went into Reforestation as well.  I drew some illustrations on the board to help them understand the repetition and a cycle.

In my "illustration" we have Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  We also have You use it at your house (top in green), you put it in the recycling (green), it goes to the recycle factory (green) and then they make it new and it goes back to your house.

We have for every tree they cut down (top left) the put two more trees up=reforestation.

To emphasize the point of a cycle, we did life cycle yoga as well.
Seeds
sprouts--slowly growing tall
starting with buds (fists) that slowly open into flowers (open hands) that play in the sun  until the fall winds shake them, and they throw their seeds to the ground (flicking fingers/wrists).

Once their seeds are out, the cycle repeats.  We did this 3-4 times around to emphasize it is the same each time.  :)
After an "in school field trip" to visit all the classrooms and collect their scrap
paper buckets, we took them to our room to recycle them.  Students turned the paper into pulp with water and a blender (and repeatedly used the word pulp--YAY!).  They then dried it on a screen, pressed teh water out, and put it out to dry!  They will be taking it home this week!

Students also worked on sorting out their recycling   They worked as a team to sort the recycling into the right recycling bins and then they graphed the results.  They then analyzed their graphing results.  Great math skills!

The recycling sort was created by Kara @ http://spedventures.blogspot.com/ , Thanks Kara!

We also started working on subtraction math!  Students had alive trees, but then some died.  How many alive trees are left?  (Found in my plant pack, Please take a look at my plant unit in my  my TpT site.  Click HERE for a direct link!) They did great with this paper!  We also got some good 1 on 1 practice with number skills and how to write the numbers. MY LITTLE 4K FRIEND ARE SUBTRACTING--AND DOING GREAT AT IT! Ahh, so proud!

Technology Tuesday-iPhone and Google+

I just got my iPhone 2 weeks ago.  I have since discovered ways to use it in my classroom and personally!

The biggest thing I have used is the camera, photos, and Google +   Let me share!

I HIGHLY SUGGEST you get a Google+ account.

1. I first take a photo on my camera.
2. I then open my Google+ App

I then go to settings and make sure my instant upload is on.  I then click, upload all photos and videos.

I then go to blogger on my computer.  (I prefer to blog from my computer, I type faster).

I then go to the photo icon on top and select from your phone.  Presto!  Photos on my blog, with out having to plug in a cord!

Next, I download them to my computer as back up (and so I can delete from my phone to save memory).

I go to google.com.  In the top left corner, you will see my name with the + in front:
 +Siraya

I then click on my name, and my Google+ comes up.

I go down the left hand side and click on the camera to bring up photos.

When you mouse over the photos, a menu pops up.

I click on instant upload.

When you are in instant upload on a computer,  you can select individual photos (the gray check marks wills turn blue) or select all (seen in blue on the top of this image).
Once photos are selected (I had selected all at this point) a menu shows up at the top. You can share, add to an album, or (my preference at this point) Download.

To my mac, it saves it as a zip file on my downloads file.  In a PC, it saves them to a zip file.  In order to move them to the file you want (I chose the pre-created themed folders in "my photos")  you must open the zip file, extract photos (top left) and pick which file to send them to.
I am just getting into the many ways I can use my phone in an educational way (besides being able to check my email at all points of the day) and promise to keep you updated!

Happy Tuesday!

Getting Acquainted-My Classroom

Click on the image above to link up!
I am linking up with Latoya: Flying into first grade!  This week: Favorite places in your room!

To see my whole room, go to My Classroom!  I have my room broken down to how I set it up and why.  Even have a picture of every center in the room.

My favorite three places in my room are:

1. My shelf I made for my room.  It is my small group area and it is cute.  It will even hold my technology eventually.

2. My weekly drawers are essential to my life, and they are cute with my new chevron theme!  I love being organized and I love feeling like I am or putting on the illusion that I am, even if sometimes I am flying by the seat of my pants. ;)

3. My birthday train!  It is so cute and I spent so much time on it!  It is not really to my theme, but it was so cute I had to have it!

Sunday Lesson Plans

Hello Blogging Friends,

Sorry I have been out for the week, it has been crazy this week.  Friday was our first added Friday of school so my usual routine was off.  Then, I got a MAJOR migraine--one of the worst I have had in a VERY long time.  I went home at 1:00pm and woke up at 10:45 to take more meds and go back to bed!  No Five for Friday for me :(

Yesterday was an amazing day: I went to a flea market and found an ADORABLE refinished, antique, chevron chair and stool. SO in love.

Then I helped my mom get ready for my brother's prom (even brothers grow so fast!) and then helped them take photos.

Then my husband and I got together for dinner, stopped at Home Depot, and purchased paint to finish our basement remodel.  It was a LONG DAY but so much fun!

Anyway, this brings us to Sunday with lesson plans and fun stuff for the week.  It is going to be crazy! I cant wait to do this week with my kiddos!

Can't wait to share with you next week how it went!

Plants, Plants, Plants!

We started our three week theme of plants this week.  We approached the area of plants from many different points of view and the students are loving it!  I love the plant unit because it is something they can see before their eyes and care about.  They are motivated to learn and they are excited to see science happen!

Please take a look at my plant unit in my  my TpT site.  Click HERE for a direct link!

We first read The Tiny Seed, by Eric Carle.  This is a great book to talk about seeds because it talks about seasons, the lifecycle of a plant, predators to the seeds, and more!  I even finish the book and start it again to emphasize the cycle of it.  They loved the book too!  They asked for it twice on day one and we read it many times throughout the unit!

We started the week off by setting up our plant experiment science journal.  (available in the pack).  I was originally going to do this activity as a small group time, but I wanted them to work with the science journals.  The pack can be printed for the whole class or printed for each individual child and stapled to make a journal.

I polled my small group on what plants need to grow.  Many knew, but if they didn't, they were using the context clues in their journal.  I would then write the word they gave me and they had to follow multi-step directions to know where to copy print onto the correct line.  I wrote the answers on a small dry erase board (hand held) and held it up for them to see.  I taught them new vocabulary for dirt--soil.  Students did better than I ever imagined on this project!
We have the greenhouses: the correct one, one with no soil, and one with no water on the window.  The one with no sun is in the drawer at circle time so we can check in on it.  We just did predictions today, we will be doing observations of the the next few weeks.

We are also testing if we can "trick" our seed into thinking paper towel is soil.  If we give the seed paper towel soil, water, and sun, will it grow?  We shall see!

We made seasons of the trees as well.  They go through life cycles, but they also go through cycles each season.  We used our hands and arms to make trees, me made budes (fists) that slowly unfolded into leaves (open hands).

We started with folding a large piece of
construction paper into four pieces
(in half and then half again).
We then did one brown handprint
at the top of each of the sections.
I added a trunk to each piece.

Students wrote in the initial sound
 they heard for each season.

We used tissue paper bunched up for buds on the spring trees.
We sponge painted green on the trees for summer.
We colorful tissue paper squares for colorful leaves for fall
We put glitter on for winter.
They were quite the mess, but they look awesome and were fun to make!

We also did lifecycle yoga.  This procedure is also available in my Plant Pack!  The students loved using their bodies to learn about seeds!

The seeds position of yoga then taught us about the safety position for our state wide tornado drill we had this week.

We had to add some days/hours to our schedule due to snow days/2 hour delays so we also had time to watch the Magic School bus.  I found full episodes online and they have subtitles so it helps build literacy too!

Earth week is next week so we will be focusing on saving our earth/plants with The Lorax, a garbage/recycle sort, and a tree subtraction problem.  Tune in next week for MORE PLANTS!
